Study on factors influencing dynamic properties of steam generator U-tubes

The steam generator (SG) is the key equipment in pressurized water reactors (PWRs) plant. Flow induced vibration has been found so far to be responsible for fatigue damage and failure of steam generator tubes subjected to two-phase cross-flow, which is an important concern to the designers of nuclear SG. Based on the synthesis of all sorts of factors influencing the dynamic characteristics of SG U- tubes, the natural frequencies, corresponding mode shapes and participation factors of U-tubes are analyzed under practical load cases and environment by theoretical analysis and numerical simulation. A virtual temperature method for heterogeneous mass density distribution based on temperature dependent material properties model is applied in SG U-tubes conveying heterogeneous mass fluid flow. The formulae considering the effects of internal and external pressures, as well as non-uniform distributed mass density in U-tubes are deduced. The influencing levels on the dynamic properties of U-tubes of the boundary constraints, pressures in primary and secondary sides, supporting width and elbow tube factor, the non-uniformities of pressures and mass along the whole tube, tube deadweight and the heat expansion are assessed.
