Improved electrocatalytic performance of platinum nanoparticles for methanol electrooxidation by Nafion-Thionine ion-pair
Nafion (Nf)-thionine (Th) ion-pair as dispersant and auxiliary catalyst was introduced into the preparation of platinum (Pt) nanoparticles for methanol electrooxidation and the resulted catalyst supported on Vulcan XC-72 carbon (NfThPt/C) was obtained. The effect of Nf, Th and Nf-Th ion-pair on the dispersivity and the electrocatalytic activity toward methanol oxidation of Pt/C was investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) under the condition of the same loading mass of Pt. The results of TEM and CV show that the best dispersion and the best electrocatalytic activity toward methanol eletrooxidation were obtained at NfThPt/C catalyst. Moreover, NfThPt/C catalyst shows excellent anti-poisoning ability and stability comparing to the E-TEK catalysts. The electrocatalytic properties of Pt for methanol electrooxidation are enhanced obviously by Nf-Th ion-pair.
