Photochemical Synthesis and Characterization of Core-Shell Gold/Palladium Bimetallic Composite Nanoparticles

The bimetallic nanoparticles with an Au core/Pd shell composite structure were synthesized in PEG-acetone solution by a photochemical reduction, using the method of simultaneous reduction of Au(III) and Pd(II) ions and Au seeding growth in the presence of Pd(II), respectively. The optical property of the composite nanoparticles was studied in the range of the molar ratio of Au:Pd from 4:1 to 1:4. Based on the characterizations by UV-Vis, XPS and TEM, an Au core/Pd shell nanostructure was confirmed and the size of bimetallic nanoparticles obtained by two approaches is between 5.6~4.6 nm and 4.6~6.2 nm, respectively. The different changing tendency of the composite particle size with a decrease of Au:Pd molar ratio in two photochemical reduction processes was explained. The mechanism of forming Au core/Pd shell composite nanoparticles was discussed briefly.
