Characterization and Modeling of Shape Memory Alloy Micro-cages for Biopsy Application

The microcage activated by shape memory effect has been studied in this project, for future biopsy application, such as cell manipulation or diagnosis. Due to comparatively low actuative temperature of SMA, a new proposed microcage with bimorph DLC/ TiNi structure by using shape memory effect is proposed, followed by theoretical analysis on its performance, along with thermal testing observed through optical microscopy. By characterizing the fabricated DLC/ TiNi microcages using XRD and DSC, a shape memory actuator, i.e. DLC/ Ti50Ni47Cu3 bimorph structures is proposed as the replacement of DLC/ Ti50Ni50 microcage with theoretical analysis as well.
