Influence of Interactions Between Active Components and MgO on Carbon Nanotubes Growth

Fe/MgO and Mo/MgO prepared by combustion method were used as catalysts for carbon nanotubes (CNTs) growth. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was applied to study the micro-structure of the catalysts. It is found that Fe and Mo interacted with MgO by different ways. In the Fe/MgO catalyst Fe interacted with MgO to form complex (MgO)x(FeO)1-x and was then dispersed into the MgO support uniformly, resulting in very small Fe nanoparticles after reduction by hydrogen. In the Mo/MgO catalyst the Mo interacted with MgO to form stoichiometry compound MgMoO4 and relative large metal Mo particles can be generated after reduction. As a result, long and small diameter CNTs with less defects can be obtained when Fe/MgO was used as catalyst. And short and relative large diameter CNTs with high yield can be grown when Mo/MgO was used. The morphology and structure of the catalysts and as-grown CNTs were characterized by Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and Raman spectroscopy.
