Voltammetric Study of Fullerene C60 and Fullerene C60 Nanotubes with Sandwich Method

In present paper two sandwich-type electrodes (RTIL/C60/SWNT/GCE or RTIL/ C60 nanotube /SWNT/GCE) with fullerene C60 or fullerene C60 nanotube interlayer covered by room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) membrane on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) surface were fabricated. Cyclic voltammetry (CV)and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) were used to explore the difference of fullerene C60 and fullerene C60 nanotube in electrochemical responses and the reason was presumed. It has been observed that 4 pairs of quasi-reversible redox peaks occurred on the RTIL/C60/SWNT/GCE, while only two irreversible reductive peaks appeared on RTIL/C60 nanotube/SWNT/GCE. The electrochemical behaviors showed that both electrodes were adsorption-controlled processes. The cathodic and anodic peak potentials didnt shift with the change of electrolyte pH, indicating that no protons were involved in both electrode reation processes. The redox reaction occurred on the fullerene C60 or fullerene C60 nanotube could be considered a simple electron transfer process and fullerene C60 or fullerene C60 nanotube behaved like an electron accumulator to accept and release electrons.
