Synthesis and Tribological Properties of Tubular MS2 (M=Nb,Ta) Nanostructures

Recently, the inorganic fullerene-like (IF) transition metal sulfide MS2 (M=Mo,W) nanotubes have been synthesized, and tribological properties of them as additives in lubricants have been studied in details. Here, the MS2 (M=Nb,Ta) nanostubes analogy to layered MS2(M=Mo,W) were prepared via solid state reaction method, and the tribological properties of MS2(M=Nb,Ta) nanotubes were studied over a wide range of normal loads and sliding velocities. The size distributions and shapes of sulfides were characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results indicate that the MS2 (M=Nb,Ta) compounds have tubular structures with the mean diameter 100nm and length 10 microns. The effect of NbS2 and TaS2 nanotubes added in commercial lubricating oil T40, was initially studied using the instrument MS-T3000. The results show that the antiwear ability of NbS2 and TaS2 as additives is better than that of the normal lubricating oil in ambient conditions obviously. The general frictional properties of the solid lubricant, contained TaS2, better than those of the solid lubricant contained NbS2. Moreover, the frictional mechanism is discussed primitively.
