Analysis of kinetics and mechanisms of nano iron oxide reduction with hydrogen

Green and dense nano iron oxide were reduced with hydrogen at 450-600℃. Reduction was carried out by means of weight loss technique. The structure changes accompanying the reduction process were examined with scanning electron microscopes. The results indicated that the reduction rates decreased with increase reduction extent. The rate controlling step in the reduction process was determined from the values of apparent activation energy, gas-solid mathematical formulations and the microstructure of partially reduced oxide. The kinetics of reduction by hydrogen had been found to be a complex mechanism with, initial, nucleation and growth rate controlling, followed by a mixed control of chemical kinetics and external mass diffusion and then a combined chemical reaction and pore mass diffusion at latter stages.
