Synthesis of germanium oxide nanowires via a Fe2O3-assisted hydrothermal method

Germanium oxide (GeO2) nanowires were successfully synthesized in a high yield through a Fe2O3-assisted liquid hydrothermal method. The morphology and structure of the nanowires were characterized using scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Its confirmed that the nanowires are hexagonal α-GeO2 with space group P3121, and possess the uniform wirelike morphology with 50~120 nm in diameter and several tens of micrometers in length. The nanowires can emit bright blue light with a peak at 421 nm under excitation at 400 nm at room temperature. Therefore, the as-synthesized α-GeO2 nanowires may have potential application in future integrated optical devices.
