Synthesis of titania powders by hydrolysis of TiCl4 using ammonia gas
Anatase and rutile TiO2 ultrafine powders were prepared by hydrolysis of TiCl4 using ammonia gas as precipitator at low temperatures. The type, the phase transformation, the average size and the particle shape of this powders obtained by this simple method were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) , thermogravimetric and differential scanning calorimetric analyses (TG/DSC), transmission electron microscope(TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS). Experimental results showed that, rutile and anatase were prepared at different reaction temperature and pH values. When pH≤1, rutile phase TiO2 were obtained at low temperature(30~60℃). However, when pH≥4, the phase was anatase in the same temperature range. Moreover, longer aging times didnt change the phase of TiO2 sample. These anatase sample converted to complete rutile phase after calcinations at 700℃ for 2h. Polyethylene glycol 1000 (PEG -1000) was used as steric dispersant in this study. The presence of small amounts of PEG -1000 could make titania powders well dispersed in this simple method.
