Preparation and photocatalytic property of shell-TiO2/core- Fe2O3 structural nanoparticles

A series of different ratios of shell-TiO2 to core-Fe2O3(TF) photocatalysts were prepared by sol-gel method. The structural features of the catalyst had been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The XRD result demonstrated that TF was of shell-TiO2/core-Fe2O3 structure because of the absence of the characteristic peaks assigned to the core component in the sample when the ratio was higher than 10:1. TEMs results showed that Fe2O3 core was about 10 nm and core-shell TF particles about 40-50 nm. Due to different thickness of the shell and component of rutile and coupling efficiency of two components, resulted from the difference of the ratio of shell-TiO2 to core-Fe2O3, the photocatalytic activities of these samples were different. The sample in which the ratio of TiO2 to Fe2O3 was about 20:1 presented higher photocatalytic activity than other samples.
