Preparation and Characterization of Magnetic Photocatalyst By Deposition of Nanosized TiO2 onto Fe3O4

In this paper, a magnetic-nanometer titanium dioxide/ferriferous oxide composite photocatalyst (TiO2/Fe3O4) was synthesized by a two-stage route. Firstly, the well-dispersed magnetic Fe3O4 particles with about 10 nm were synthesized by co-precipitation method. Secondly, magnetic composite by directly depositing TiO2 onto a magnetic Fe3O4 core were synthesized by sol-gel method via TBOT hydrolysis and the size of TiO2/ Fe3O4 composite particles was about 30 nm. Finally, the microstructure and the property of Fe3O4 and TiO2/Fe3O4 particles were characterized by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The results show that Fe3O4 has a face-centered-cubic (FCC) crystalline structure and exhibits superparamagnetic characteristic. Composite TiO2/ Fe3O4 with a core-shell structure are prepared by coating anatase TiO2 onto the surface of magnetic Fe3O4 cores.
