Optical absorption property and photo-catalytic activity of tin dioxide-doped titanium dioxides

SnO2-doped TiO2 films and nanometer-sized powders have been synthesized prepared by sol-gel method. Ti(OC4H9)4 and SnCl4.5H2O were used as precursors and C2H5OH was used as solvent. The optical absorption measurements indicated that the prepared SnO2 -TiO2 films exhibit smaller optical energy band gaps than those of pure TiO2 thin films and optical energy band gap shows a decrease as the heat treatment temperature increase. X-ray diffraction (XRD), was used to characterize the phase transition for the nanometer-sized particles at different heat treatment temperature. The rutile phase has appeared and coexisted with the anatase crystal phase for both pour TiO2 and SnO2-doped TiO2 nanometer-sized particles when the heat treatment temperature was 600 ℃. When the heat treatment temperature was 700 ℃ there was only rutile phase for the doped samples(Sn0.05Ti0.95O2) but there were tow crystal phases, anatase and rutile coexisted for the pure TiO2 samples. The photacatalytic activity of the particles has been conducted by measuring the degradation of methylene blue solution under ultra-violet irradiation. By the experiment, two factors and their effects were investigated, namely, the content of SnO2 in the TiO2 samples and the calcined temperature. Primary optimum SnO2 content and calcined temperature for the photo-catalytic degradation of methylene blue were obtained.
