Preparation and characterization of polyvinyl alcohol modified by silica sol
Polyvinyl alcohol/silica films with different concentrations of silica were synthesized by sol-gel technique. The structure, morphology and mechanical properties of these films were investigated by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electro-stress testing machine techniques. The results suggested that hydroxyl groups of PVA involve in condensation reaction with silanol groups in silica sol, forming covalently bonded network structure. The yield strength, modulus and fracture strength were markedly improved by the addition of silica, while the fracture elongations decreased. When the proportion of silica is 20wt%, the yield strength, modulus and fracture strength are 18.72MPa, 86.2MPa, 14.23MPa, respectively, which were 130%, 78% and 124% higher than those of pure PVA. The solubility decreased with increasing silica content. These results give insight to the applications of PVA in medical materials.
