Assembly of PS colloidal crystals with large area single crystal by induced evaporation method

Induced evaporation method, which is used to assemble PS colloidal crystal with large area single crystal, is presented in this paper. In this process ethanol was added into PS microspheres and water suspension and heated. Under a certain condition, the first layer of colloidal crystal was assembled through adopting hydrophobic probe as nuclear to induce the assembly rapidly at appropriate time, and then the assembly went on until finished. Finally, PS colloidal crystals with large area single crystal were obtained. The results showed that after PS microspheres suspension system (the phase concentration was 6wt% and the initial weight percent of ethanol in dispersing medium was 7wt%) was placed in a convection furnace at 95℃ about 20-30min, PS microspheres could be induced to assemble successfully by adopting acerose plastic spiculas as probe. This method realized a growth style of assembling PS colloidal crystal with single nuclear in itself.
