Rapid Synthesis of Phase Change Materials by One-step Solid-state Chemical Reaction at Low Heating Temperature

The synthesis of SiO2 coated lauric acid (LA) nanoparticles via one-step, low heating temperature solid-state chemical reaction is reported. Analytical results of Infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction prove that the lauric acid (LA) was coated with a layer of SiO2. Morphology of scanning electron microscopy suggests that the sample is comprised of sphere-like nanoparticals with average diameter about 200 nm. The as-prepared sample has been studied with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The transformation temperatures is 42.7℃and the fusion enthalpy are 121.03 J/g. The result shows that the sample possesses reasonable thermal property as a phase change material for latent heat energy storage application.
