The alignment of SWNTs in polymer by repeated stretching method
The SWNTs/PMMA composite with good alignment, uniformity and dispersion of SWNTs were fabricated by in situ polymerization and using repeated mechanical stretching method. The semidried mixture was stretched along one direction repeatedly to align SWNTs in the composite matrix. The SEM and the TEM micrograph demonstrated that SWNTs were aligned in the stretching direction and well dispersed in the matrix. Polarized Raman spectra with various incidence angles indicated that SWNTs had a good alignment in the composite. The composite presented distinct anisotropic electrical and mechanical properties. The SWNTs/PMMA composite presented higher electrical conductivity and the mechanical properties along the stretching direction than vertical to it. The dynamic model of SWNTs realigning in the stretching process was established in this paper to explain the mechanism of the SWNTs orientation along stretching direction under action of stream shear stress in matrix.
