Synthesis of LaF3:Er,Yb/LaF3 core/shell nanocrystals for potential optical amplifiers application

Organic ligands modified LaF3:Er,Yb nanocrystals (NCs) and LaF3:Er,Yb/LaF3 core/shell nanocrystals have been prepared, which have wonderful dispersibility in non-polar organic solvents such as toluene, cyclohexane and chloroform. The resulting NCs show strong emission around the 1550 nm telecommunication window when excited at 974 nm in room temperature. The luminescence intensity of LaF3:Er,Yb/LaF3 core/shell nanocrystals is stronger than that of LaF3: Er,Yb nanocrystals, and the photoluminescence lifetime is longer than LaF3: Er,Yb nanocrystals. Using a double exponential decay functions fit, a longer lifetime is about 150μs. NCs synthesized by this method eliminate O-H effect, and can be incorporated with some low-loss polymer produces a promising candicate for waveguide amplifiers operating at 1550nm.
