Effect of sedimentation mediums on Monodispersed Silica Fabrication Opal Structural Template under Gravitational Field

Monodispersed silicon dioxide spherical particles were synthesized by improved Sol-gel methods, tetraethoxysilane as silicon material, ammonia as catalyst and ethanol as solvent. Mean diameter 250nm±, 280nm± and 320nm± of silica spheres sedimentation and organization in different mediums of distilled water, ethanol, acetone and the mixture (water, ethanol) were investigated. SEM shows monodispersed silica particles fabrication by gravity sedimentation in ethanol or acetone trend to forming three-dimension closed packing structural opal, yet ethanol is superior to acetone. It is indicated that the velocity of isometric silica microspheres sedimentation in water, ethanol and acetone reveal almost no different, basing the silica spheres sedimentation experiment. The influence of sedimentation mediums on opal templates results from their surface tension and viscosity. The formation mechanism of opal by gravitational field sedimentation was also discussed.
