Study on the Performance and Membrane Formation Mechanism of PES/nano-SiO2 Hybrid Membrane

In this paper, by means of wet phase inversion process, blending adequate quantity of nano-SiO2 in the polyethersulfone (PES) casting solution, the PES/SiO2 hybrid membranes were prepared. The kinetics of membrane formation, microstructure and properties were tested and analyzed. The results showed that comparison with natural PES casting solution, there was enhanced phase separation speed of casting solution under the condition of containing 4 wt% of nano-SiO2 in PES matrix. The SEM photos indicated that there were much larger finger pores in the section of PES/nano-SiO2 hybrid membrane. The properties of pure water flux and retention were affected during the SiO2 concentration increasing in the PES composite. At lower content of SiO2 in the PES composite, the retention of membrane was increased evidently while the pure water flux oppositely decreased. With increasing the concentration of SiO2, the pure water flux was increased obviously, meanwhile, the retention could be kept enhancement.
