The irregular nanotubes and onions in the prepared boron-doped carbon powder
Using B4C particles and carbon electrodes as starting materials, boron-doped carbon powder was prepared by an alternating current arc discharge under helium. In the as-made powder, a large amount of bar-like graphitic crystals, nanotubes and onions were observed by TEM. B mapping image revealed that the bar-like graphitic crystals contained substitutional B. Nanotube and onion exhibited various forms. A few of multi-walled carbon nanotubs with innermost diameter of 0.34 nm were also found. The results support the possibility that the irregular nanotubes and onions might be formed through curling of the graphene sheets with B participation.
