Structural instability of multi-walled carbon nanotube under electron beam irradiation

The structural instability of a multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT), with its free standing end being attached by an amorphous carbon nanoparticle, and a MWCNT curved locally in axial direction were respectively investigated under electron beam irradiation at room temperature by our developed in-situ transmission electron microscopy observation technique. It was observed that in the former MWCNT the attaching amorphous carbon nanoparticle shrunk preferentially and thus demonstrated a pronounced passivation effect on the shrinkage in axial direction of the MWCNT, whereas in the latter MWCNT, the MWCNT curved locally in axial direction was more instable than the rest part of MWCNT which is straight in axial direction. The above electron beam-induced athermal activation phenomena can be well accounted for by the completely new concepts of nanocurvature of carbon nanotube and ultrafast electron beam-induced soft mode and lattice instability as we recently proposed.
