Evaluations of zero-sequence reactance relay application in Ultra-High-Voltage transmission lines

Measuring impedance keeps hyperbola function to fault distance for impedance relay in Ultra-High-Voltage (UHV) transmission lines caused by the distributed characteristics of line parameters. Hence, the performance of ground impedance relay is sensitive to earth resistance decided by the characteristics of hyperbola function. In response to the question, the Zero Sequence Reactance Relay (ZSRR) is evaluated in the paper to verify its performance, which is widely adopted in High-Voltage and Extra-High-Voltage transmission systems owing to its good anti-resistance ability and stable protective zone. The possible influence factors are also analyzed, it reveals that the protective zone largely reduction for ZSRR application in UHV lines is mainly caused by the estimation error of the phase angle for fault current in earth branch, and the chief factor influencing the relay sensitivity is the high capacity of load current. The new algorithm should be developed for the practical application of ZSRR in UHV lines.
