Application of Vacuum On-Load Tap-Changers in Phase-Shifting Transformers Introduction
The selection of on-load tap-changers (OLTCs) for application in phaseshifting transformers (PSTs) differs in some tasks from that for standard power transformers (PTs). These differences has to be taken into account seriously in the planning stage of these special transformers. After an brief introduction of PST applications typical designs are discussed. A guidance in questions of selecting the appropriate OLTC for application in PSTs is given. Comparing to the OLTC operation in PTs, the operation in PSTs is characterized by the high operation number and load variation, which cause an increased maintenance demand due to load dependent contact wear. The vacuum OLTCs have an extremely low contact wear in the sealed vacuum interrupters and provide a significant benefit in PSTs.
