Study on the Velocity of Explosively Formed Projectile Used for Penetrating Non-uniform Medium

Explosively formed projectile (EFP) is applied to penetrating non-uniform medium with lots of advantages. To exactly predict the effect of penetration, this thesis does research on the velocity of EFP that is key parameter on penetration. Based on the typical shaped charge designed for penetrating, the criterion of numerical method is discussed, and the processes of EFP formation, velocity and kinetic energy are numerically simulated with LS-DYNA3D finite element code. To demonstrate the simulated results, one simple engineering method to assess velocity of EFP in common use are provided. The results from the theoretical analysis are in good agreement with numerical simulation. It provides an important reference for improvement and optimization of EFP design, and is valuable for the penetration of non-uniform medium.
