A Novel MULTI-Protocol Serial Controller Testing Method

The MULTI-Protocol Serial controller (MPSC ) is a microcomputer peripheral device which supports Asynchronous, Byte Synchronous (Monosync, IBM Bisync), and Bit Synchronous (ISOs HDLC, IBMs Bisync) protocol. This controllers flexible architecture allows easy implementation of many variations of these three protocols with low software and hardware overhead. The MPSC supports several microprocessor interface option: polled, wait, interupt driven and DMA driven. How to test the MPSC has become the hot topic and difficulty in micro-controller field. In this paper, a novel efficient test method for simulating MPSC is presented. The software and hardware method adopt ModelSource hardware system in logic modeling of SYNOPSYSs, combining the NC_verilog tool of CANDENCE has been taken. It can reduce the compile and setup time greatly and improve observability compared the conventional hardware emulator methods. This test method uses HDL co-simulation process to verify the MPSC with multicycle to interface with I/O processor in polled, wait, interrupt driven and DMA driven modes of operation under all protocols. The MPSCs response to an interrupt acknowledge sequence in 8085Model, 8085Mode2 and 8086/88Mode is also verified. The special function of MPSC that send abort, address search mode and synchar load inhibit are simulated under the test method.
