Study of the Characteristics of Hilbert-Huang Transform for Processing Non-Stationary Signas

In this paper, we first introduce the Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT), which can get meaningful instantaneous frequency in the study of transient or non-stationary phenomena. The instantaneous frequency is based on Hilbert transform but with restrictions. Physically, the necessary conditions for us to define a meaningful instantaneous frequency is that the functions are symmetric with respect to the local zero mean, and have the same numbers of zero crossings and extremum. In practice, the signals are not usually obey these rules, and we have to decompose them into Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMFs) that satisfy these conditions. Having obtained the intrinsic mode functions, we will have no difficulties in applying the Hilbert Transform to each basic mode component, computing the instantaneous frequency, and decomposing the signal in the frequency-time domain. The deduce expression of intrinsic mode function is described. At the last, the characteristics of the HHT, such as the physical meaning of the intrinsic mode functions, instantaneous frequency, having better joint time-frequency resolution than Wavelet Analysis, without cross terms that exist in Wigner-Ville distribution analysis are discussed.
