Study on Ballistic Missile Track Initiation Based on Satellite Observations

An algorithm is presented to initiate tracks of a ballistic missile in the initial exoatmospheric phase, using line of sight (LOS) measurements from one or more satellites. A major shortcoming of the Gauss-Newton iterative least squares minimization algorithm is that convergence depends strongly on the initial guess. By using the more sophisticated Levenberg-Marquardt method, this difficult has been overcome. Monte Carlo simulation studies were performed. The results showed that the algorithm was efficient.
