Hydraulic Pump Early Fault Diagnosis by Oil Synthetic Analysis Techniques

Hydraulic pumps of a few machines did not work suddenly for adhesive wear. To ascertain the fault cause, the oil synthetic analytical techniques were used to analyze present unused oil compared with former unused oil, as well as present used oil with former used oil. Firstly, the Viscidity and total base number (TBN) of the hydraulic oil used for 2,500 h were analyzed by routine physical and chemical analysis (RPCA) and proved eligible. Secondly, the test results of particle counter showed that present unused oil was set at the unallowable contamination level (ISO 20/17, equal to NAS 11), much higher than that of former unused oil. So particles contamination in present unused oil was the cause of hydraulic pump early fault. Thirdly, the test results of spectrographic oil analysis (SOA )also showed that the pollutants in present unused oil were more than that in former unused oil. Finally, the test results of ferrographic oil analysis (FOA) clearly showed that wear particle pollutants in present unused oil was much higher than that of former unused oil, and these pollutants was dust. By the oil synthetic analytical techniques above, it was ascertained the severe contamination of present unused hydraulic oils (ISO 20/17) was the main cause of the hydraulic pumps early fault. In detail, the solid pollutants entered hydraulic components and caused severe adhesive wear. In short, oil synthetic analytical techniques were essential for machines to avoid early fault by monitoring oil contamination and machinery wear state.
