Design of a Modular Avionics System for a Small Unmanned Helicopter

In modern UAV aircraft avionics systems, it is important to provide the ability for upgrades and modifications. To provide this functionality, a modular design approach is critical. A modular design is one in which components of the avionics system can be added or subtracted easily, with little system redesign. This paper focuses first on the design aspects of the hardware and the low level software. A small guidance, navigation, and control system has been developed and tested then be described. The system comprises safety and protection system, data processor, ground control station, navigation and guidance, and autonomous flight controllers, every module are independent comparatively. An enhanced serial peripheral interface or an asynchronous, full duplex serial port is available to communicate between different modules. Vibration isolation with proper frequency characteristics is essential for the flight of a small unmanned helicopter, that also been described in this paper.
