Generating Technique of Wideband Chirp Signal Applying to FM/CW Laser Range Finder

The purpose of this paper is to introduce the basic principles of the laser range finder based on frequency modulation/continuous wave (FM/CW) ranging principles and to discuss the key technologies in generation of the wideband chirp (also named Linear FM) signal. A summary of FM ranging theory and basic theory of operation in the laser range finder are described at the beginning. Then, a digital approach for the generation of wideband chirp signal is introduced. The key technologies, including the generation of the wideband FM baseband signal based on direct digital synthesis (DDS) and the bandwidth extension method via quadarture modulation, are discussed in detail.
