On-line Measurement of Local Residence Time Distribution of Screw Elements in Extrusion Processes

The online measurement of Residence Time Distribution (RTD) is essential for the control of reactive extrusion processes. To achieve the online measurement of RTD at the extrusion die, a special constructed extrusion die was designed and the structure of the optical fiber probe was also improved. The local RTDs of kneading blocks of various angles, Turbine Mixing Element (TME) and Chevron Propagation Element (CPE) in the extrusion process were obtained, and the influences of operation parameters and the species of screw elements on the local RTD in the extrusion process were investigated. It can be concluded that the TMEs have the longest delay time, greatest width of curve, and the best mixing effect; 30o kneading blocks have the greatest transportation capability, the shortest delay time, but their mixing effect is the worst; CPEs are intermediate between 30o and 60o kneading blocks. Its obvious that a screw configuration including TMEs has better mixing effect than kneading blocks and CPEs, while its transportation capability is poorer than screw configurations including kneading blocks and CPEs.
