Research on Shunt Active Power Filter Applied to the Arc Furnace Electric Power System for Harmonics Compensation

Shunt active power filter(SAPF )is proposed to eliminate distorted current and compensate poor power factor, for the industrial power system polluted by harmonics and voltage fluctuation that produced by the arc furnace. Based on the constructed equivalent harmonics model of simplified arc furnace electric power system, two compensation schemes are put forward and compensation effects are analyzed from theory perspective, furthermore, improved scheme is proposed. According to simulation models of arc furnace electric power system and SAPF, some simulations have been carried out to evaluate the behavior of the original compensation schemes and the improved compensation schemes by using the popular MATLAB/SIMULINK software. The simulation results prove that analysis of original compensation schemes is correct, the improved compensation schemes are effective and performance of SAPF is outstanding, simultaneously the paper illustrates that application SAPF to the power system must be under a certain circumstance.
