Applications of Fiber Optic Surface Plasmon Resonance Sensors: Review
Great progress has been made in many aspects since the first application of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) phenomenon for sensing almost thirty years ago. Especially, optical-fiber sensors based on SPR effect (FO-SPR sensors) present great attraction in the highest level of miniaturization, multichanel distributive sensing and capability of transmitting optical signals over a long distance. This paper attempts to review the major applications of FO-SPR technology, including fiber optic SPR for chemical sensing, fiber optic SPR for biosensing and fiber optic SPR sensors for measurement of non-electronic quantities. Future prospects of FO-SPR sensor technology are discussed.
