Autonomous Software-defined Radio Platform: An Intrinsic Evolvable Hardware Approach

As an important part of deep space TT&C system, the software-defined radio (SDR) platform needs the ability to handle whatever type of radio signal happens to hit its antennas without the help of earth station or relay satellite. Blind adaptive algorithms running on an on-board processor can recognize the incoming signal with little a priori knowledge. These algorithms, however, will fail to receive signals not compatible with the fixed hardware characteristics such as IF digital filter bandwidth, sampling frequency and digital down conversion frequency. Thus an intrinsic evolvable hardware (EHW) approach, which is a combination of evolution algorithms and dynamically reconfigurable device, is studied. Evolvable hardware autonomously changes its architecture and behavior according to the change of environment or assigned tasks. By the adoption of EHW scheme, the on-board SDR platform can evolve a feasible configuration bit stream by itself; thereby the spacecraft achieve the ability of online adaptation.
