Non-Contact Measurement of Traveling Wave Resonant Frequencies of Disk-Shaped Rotating Components

Traveling wave resonance can cause catastrophic failure in disk-shaped rotating components and accurate measurement of the resonant frequency is essential for preventing the resonance from happening. This paper proposes an acoustical method for this measurement. Theoretical basis of this method is analyzed and a measurement experiment with a pair of bevel gears is conducted. The traveling wave vibration of the gear while in operation is measured by a microphone through a sound guide tube approached to the gear surface and the resonant frequencies are determined by spectrum analysis of the acoustic signal. Experiments show that the proposed method is convenient to use and gives satisfactory results. It is also proved that this method is suitable for hostile measurement conditions such as high temperature and strong lubricant disturbance.
