Experimental Study on Oil-on-water Technology in Lathe Machining by Cutting

In the traditional cutting method, there are often apply wet cutting and oil water emulsion to cooling/lubrication. The experimental results indicate that such cutting cooling/lubrication effect is so well if cutting fluid also well. However, the traditional use of cutting fluids in machining process has caused some problems such as high cost, pollution, and hazards to operators health, which will be force researchers to minimize or even avoid the use of cutting fluids in machining operations. Now, several methods has been experiment in manufacture, for example, cooling air lubrication 、liquid nitrogen lubrication 、minimal quantity lubrication(MQL)and water vapor lubrication. Based on the green lubrication, Recently two of the authors proposed a new type of MQL in which a minimal amount of oil is supplied into a cutting point, carried by and mixed with water droplets, called oil film on water droplets(OoW). The test in milling investigated that the cutting force can be reduced, more than by the supply of the same amount of oil droplets alone1. The paper investigates the effect of flood coolant, dry cutting, compress air and oil-on-water(OoW) technologies on tool wear 1 and cutting forces. Experiment result show that applications of OoW cutting fluid not only reduce cutting force comparing to dry cutting 、oil water emulsion and compressed air. The tool life is also extended much longer in direct on applications of OoW lubrication method than dry cutting , oil water emulsion and compress air.
