Research and Development on CMM Offline Programming

A novel DMIS program planning method is proposed in the paper aimed to exert the most capacity of a CMM (Coordination Measurement Machine) effectively and decrease the measurement cost under the pressure of the fiercely competition in mechanical manufacturing industry. It is realized by the following three main steps, firstly, acquiring the measuring objects and the data by accessing the original 3D model of a measured part; secondly, planning the measuring sequence of the measurement objects according to pre-defined rules and then confirming by machine-human interaction; thirdly, planning the measurement path without collision between the probe and the measured part automatically. A prototype software tool has been developed by taking advantages of the method and the measurement program, planned by the software tool and stored with DMIS (Dimension Measurement Interface Standard), can be run correctly on CMM devices. It can save about 30% time consumed for DMIS program planning compared with the traditional ways.
