Eddy Current Technique for Gear Crack Detection and Monitoring
Eddy current testing has been widely used for damage detection and quality inspection, but the usage has been mainly limited to stationary equipment and disassembled machine parts. This paper proposes a new method that uses eddy current instrument to detect and monitor gear cracks while the gear is in operation. Factors influencing the eddy current generation are analyzed and a simple yet effective signal processing method for gear crack identification is presented. Based on a comparison analysis of eddy current damage detection and eddy current vibration measurement, experiments on a high-speed bevel gear with different artificial cracks were conducted directly using an available eddy current vibration gauge. The experimental results show that the proposed method can reliably detect surface cracks in a gear at very early stage, easily identify different types of crack, and effectively monitor the crack growth.
