A Study of Reactive Power Compensation and Harmonic Damping in Electric Traction Substation
The electric railway traction loads are characterized as poor power factor, high harmonic content, and power and voltage fluctuation. Reactive power compensation and harmonic damping are two severe problems in electric railway. This paper presents a novel scheme for reactive power and harmonic compensation using an active power filter (APF). This scheme is based on the reactive power compensation and filtering theory in electric traction substation. Modelling and simulation of a shunt APF based on MATLAB are also presented. Simulation results show the excellent harmonic damping and compensation performance.
