MEMS Based Adaptive Drug Delivery System: Design & Development
This paper describes MEMS Drug Delivery system to a living body. The system consists of a micro sensor, micro-channel, drug reservoir and a micro pump along with a real time control system monitoring the drug release. As an example, insulin delivery system is proposed to control glucose content of blood of a human body. Glucose content in the body is sampled at regular intervals and insulin is released whenever glucose content exceeds a threshold value. A standard human body model is used to simulate the results. Performance of the device was measured against blood glucose level. The main advantage of this system is maintenance of nearly a constant glucose level in the blood through adaptive feedback mechanism.
