Thermal Stability of Carbon Nanotubes in Atmosphere
The experimental observation explicates that carbon nanotubes (CNT) oxidization appears at high temperature in atmosphere and the oxidization leads the structure breakage of CNTs and weight loss of the CNTs. The oxidization of CNTs is not acute and rapid as combustion. There is not critical temperature when the oxidization of CNTs appears. Theoretical analysis shows that the oxidization of CNTs does not release tremendous heat quantity, chain reaction does not appear. The oxidization of CNTs is dominated by the interaction energy between oxygen molecules and carbon atoms of CNTs. Because the kinetic energy of oxygen molecules is not same at a certain temperature, there is not critical temperature when the oxidization of CNTs appears. The reason, which the oxidization of CNTs hardly appears below 673K, is that the structure instability of CNTs increases with the temperature rising.
