Study of Flow and Energy Losses of T-junctions with Partial Barrier

The problem of partial barrier in oil pipelines takes place frequently, especially, in T-junctions. In this paper, characteristics of flows and energy loss at T-junctions are presented. Numerical simulations are used to visualize flows at T-junctions with partial barriers. Simulations are carried out for several flow rates, partial barrier sizes, and pressure differences. Energy losses at junctions with several partial barrier diameters are shown and discussed. The results show that loss coefficient from upstream main pipe to downstream main pipe is about 8% higher than loss coefficient from lateral pipe to main pipe, when there is no partial barrier. The difference between above two coefficients becomes smaller and smaller as the partial barrier diameter becomes smaller. Conditions which two flow rates at the lateral pipe and the upstream main pipe are the same, are searched and shown in this paper.
