Describing Function Analysis of Nonlinearities in Gyrocompass Alignment

There are various nonlinear effects that affect the alignment precision and the alignment speed in gyrocompass alignment. The primary nonlinear factors include the backlash character of torque motor and the quantizing character of accelerometer. Describing function techniques for the analysis of the nonlinear devices are based on the harmonic linearization. The relative position between the Nyquist curve of the linear portion and the negative inverse describing function curve of the nonlinear portion is plotted. According to the Nyquist stabilization criterion, the self-oscillation condition and the system stabilization are analyzed in detail. The chief purpose of this paper is to research the primary cause of the system self-oscillation and to provide the basic methods designed the system to avoid the self-oscillation or to decrease the oscillating amplitude. Several sets of experiments in MATLAB environment have been carried out. The results of simulation indicate the validity of the methods.
