Design and Evaluation of A New Movement Detection and Address Configuration Method for supporting Seamless Mobile IPv6 Handover

In Mobile IP and its fast handover protocol, mobile node needs to configure temporal IP address after handed over from one access router to another. Movement detection, router discovery and duplicate address detection are procedures needed in the handover. We study the impact of those procedures on IP handover latency in this paper. Several methods to accelerate those procedures are investigated, but they still can not make the handover seamless. We present a new method: reserve one address per IP subnet at each neighboring access routers for mobile node, and mobile node couple each reserved address with identifiers that identify access points connected to the corresponding subnet, mobile node selects an address according the target access points identifier while performing handover. The mathematical analysis of the new method is carried out and the result shows that our proposal can reduce handover latency significantly and achieve seamless handover.
