Detection of Cracks in Computer Tomography Images of Logs Based on Fractal Dimension

Computer Tomography (CT) is being increasingly employed for automated detection and localization of internal defects in logs prior to their sawing. Reliable detection and localization of cracks in CT images of logs is particularly important from the viewpoint of lumber production planning since the presence of cracks substantially reduces the value and also compromises the structural strength of the resulting lumber. In this paper, a method for crack detection is presented, Adopting box-counting method detected log image cracks effectively. Describe the irregular degree of image in quantity by using the value of fractal dimension to confirm the defects position. There were differences in fractal dimension between the normal regions and the cracks. The values of normal regions in log image were about 2.0883, while that of the cracks were between 1.4000 and 1.9000. The results show that fractal dimension was useful to numerically detect the inter defects of log. This study provides a new method for edge detection of CT log image.
