A Revised Framework for the Design of Chinese Cities
Concern has been expressed regarding development strategies in the cities of China. An exuberant model of large-scale clearance, and resource-intensive and western-influenced building has brought both unparalleled change and environmental impact. It is proposed that less centralized and invasive models of intervention be adopted, that balance local districtlevel needs and opportunities with city wide strategic concerns. Also,an alternative agenda of goals and priorities is recommended as a basis to future city designand implementation: low impact and universal accessibility; reenergizing of local districts and economic opportunity through a mix of associated uses, buildings and streets; harvestingurban energy and water; “greening the city as a key to its amenity and environmental improvement; and strengthening identity, city culture and character.
