“History, Social Reform, Model Communities, and Post-Industrial Urban Ills

History has revealed that industrialization manifests great impacts upon the urban situ, and from the early-1800s the negative imp acts of industrial transition were noticeable owing to mounting dirt, disease and deprivation within ritish settlements. As such Edwin Chadwick, a pioneering English civil servant, was among the first to admit something now globally acknowledged: industrial transition and its collaborator rapid urban growth are a cultural paradox. On the one hand they encourage, amongst other things, social unease, slum building and individualism through the endorsement of competition over co-operation. Yet on the other hand they can be engines of betterment by conquering age-old problems, initiating new human relationships and thinking processes. Taking into consideration this incongruity this proposal scrutinizes an internationally-recognized post-industrial reform paradigm, the Garden City idea. The model, with its socio-economic strategies analogous with Sustainability, demonstrated civilizing elements of present-day pertinence in addressing the inevitability of economic and social predicaments in the evolving urban context: existing cultural, legal, economic and political systems can harness societal betterment if carefully managed; improved living conditions can be established via means of land purchase and reform, in particular through the co-operative ownership of land. Accordingly by referring to historical model communities, this paper will reveal how nations can be dynamic, assiduous and progressive as a consequence of enshrining social harmony concepts originally executed in experimental social settlements within their legal structures, and concurrently how traditions in the post-industrial situation can be utilized to ensure social assimilation.
