Analysis on Variation in Farmers Well-being After Rural-urban Land Conversion

By means of a survey based on a representative sample of farmers whose rural land is expropriated in urban fringe area of Wuhan city, this paper calculates these farmers’welfare index laconically which shows the farmer’s welfare conditions. And then the variation coefficient of well-being is put forward to evaluate the welfare differences among these farmers. Hereafter a multivariate linear regression model is performed to uncover the main factors affecting landlost farmers’ welfare. The conclusion shows that (1) though the Gini coefficient of the households is decreased after land conversion, the variation coefficient of well-being is larger;(2) the main factors affecting farmers’ elfare variation are the proportion of expropriated land, employment opportunities, farmer’s education level, and extent of satisfaction with compensation. Therefore, providing social insurance, giving a job, training the farmers should be adopted instead of monetary compensation only. Thus wise, peasants’ welfare can be improved, and well-being difference among farmers can be reduced meanwhile.
