Adsorption of Colored Impurities by Activated Carbons to Recover Terephthalic Acid from PTA Residue

Decolourization by activated carbon is a feasible method to recovery terephthalic acid from purified terephthalic acid (PTA) residue. For removing the colored compounds in the solid residue, the adsorptive behavior of colored impurities on activated carbons was studied in this paper. Effects of temperature, activated carbon types and water content were investigated experimentally. The results show that adsorption of colored impurities in DMSO solution follow the Langmuir isotherm. Different type of activated carbon, AC-I and AC-II, exhibit quite different temperature sensitivities and AC-II is more sensitivity. Addition of water to DMSO solution enhances the adsorption of colored impurities on the activated carbon.
